It was pointed out to me that another use of MDF is by the Maine Development Foundation. While they are one of the oldest private-public partnerships in the country, having been started in 1978, they are not as old as my use of MDF, which dates back to 1965. In any case, the Maine Development Foundation drives sustainable, long-term economic growth for the state of Maine, which seems like a good thing. I have great memories of Maine, having gone there on a classic 'everybody into the car' family vacation, which involved eating Lobster for the first time and going to the top of Cadillace Mountain in Arcadia National Park.

Browsing Wikipedia, I noticed the other day that .mdf is a file extension used in several applications. So, MDF also apparently stands for 'Machine Data File', 'Molecular Data File', 'Menu Definition File', 'Master Data File', and is the extension used in the game Star Trek: Armada for a file that stores map title & image information. The Wikipedia article can be found here.
